WHAT WE DO

MISSION
Every child belongs to a family and grows with love, respect and security.

VISION
We build families for children in need, we help them shape their own futures, and we share in the development of their communities.

We, at SOS Childrens Villages, take action for children as an independent non-governmental social development organisation. We respect varying religions and cultures, and we work in countries and communities where our mission can contribute to development. We work in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and we promote these rights around the world.

BACKGROUND
The SOS Childrens Villages South Africa is a private, charitable, social development organisation. It is politically and denominationally independent, and is an affiliated member of SOS-Kinderdorf International.

For 30 years, SOS Childrens Villages has been making an impact on the lives of so many people, more especially children in South Africa. 1982 marked the founding of the national association "SOS Childrens Village Association of South Africa".

The first village was built in in Ennerdale in 1982 and then during the past 27 years, SOS built 7 more villages across the country: Mamelodi, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Mthatha, Pietermaritzburg, Nelspruit and Rustenburg. In addition there are three Social Centres: Qwa-Qwa, Sekhekhune and Mathanjane.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Family Strengthening Programmes
Our community-based work focuses on preventing children from losing the care of their families, which means working primarily with child-headed households and households where children are living with terminally ill parents.
Another common phenomenon in our country is to see grandmother-headed households.
Our family strengthening programme expa

Currently SOS has about 950 children in our permanent care programme, and in the Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) there are about 5 000 people (children, parents and grandparents) which is short term care. The latter is where SOS concentrates all its efforts now to reach as many children and families as possible, to prevent further deterioration of family structures and care givers.

The Directory of NGOs in Africa is a growing directory of (all) non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and emerging organisations in Africa. The listed information consists of the organisations contact information, its aims, current projects - activities, photo gallery, volunteering opportunities etc. Further, it features information that help donors have a peace of mind such as organisation registration number, a note to confirm organisations contactability, a link to an organisations financial auditor etc. The main aim of the directory (print and online) is to make information on NGOs in Africa readily available to businesses that want to be involved in Africa, donors, volunteers and ordinary people who want tomake a difference in Africa. We believe anyone and everyone can make a difference.
