WHAT WE DO

MISSION
We build families for children in need, we help them shape their own futures, and we share in the development of their communities.

Our Worldwide Claim
A loving home for every child

VISION
Every child belongs to a family and grows with love respect and security

We take action for children as an independent non-governmental social development organization. We respect varying religions and cultures, and we work in countries and communities where our mission can contribute to the development. We work in the spirit of the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child and we promote these rights around the world.

With the SOS Childrens Village concept, our organization pioneered a family approach to the long-term care of orphaned and vulnerable children. Our Family Strengthening Programme caters for children from child-headed, granny-headed and single parented families living under impoverished conditions. In Botswana we have three SOS Childrens Villages in Tlokweng, Francistown and Serowe.
Without the support given internationally and locally we would not manage to care for more than 2000 in both our Family Based Care and the Family Strengthening Programs.

BACKGROUND
The first SOS Childrens Village was founded by Hermann Gmeiner in 1948 in Imst , Austria. He was committed to helping children in need-children who had lost their homes, their security and their families as a result of the Second World War.
With the support of the many donors and co-workers, our organization has grown to help children all over the world.

CURRENT PROJECTS

DONATIONS in kind. Every donation, however frequent and however small, is meaningful. We welcome clothing, toys, books, sporting equipment and foodstuffs. All goods are distributed amongst the family houses.

Child Sponsorship payments are used to support a particular child to pay for food, clothing, school fees and medical care.
Village Sponsorship helps all the children living in a village and payments are used for the running costs electricity, water, maintenance and up keep, and so on.
House Sponsorship payments are put towards the running costs of a particular SOS family.
Project Sponsorship covers the costs of a specific project.

The Directory of NGOs in Africa is a growing directory of (all) non-profit and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and emerging organisations in Africa. The listed information consists of the organisations contact information, its aims, current projects - activities, photo gallery, volunteering opportunities etc. Further, it features information that help donors have a peace of mind such as organisation registration number, a note to confirm organisations contactability, a link to an organisations financial auditor etc. The main aim of the directory (print and online) is to make information on NGOs in Africa readily available to businesses that want to be involved in Africa, donors, volunteers and ordinary people who want tomake a difference in Africa. We believe anyone and everyone can make a difference.
